It was a breakfast that was trying too hard. 10 out of 10 for trying though

Hot Poppy Cafe is warm, cosy and full of local charm ☕ The food is comforting and well prepared, and the coffee is consistently good. Friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere make it a great neighbourhood café to start the day.

Used to go here all the time as a child. Delicious Chicken Schnitzel, fantastic workers who genuinely care about the service they provide, and there seems to be passion in their eyes. Atmosphere is welcoming and rustic, which is something nostalgic I see every time. Giving good patronage might earn you a marshmallow at the end of your dining. Water is fresh and tastes fresh too.

This used to be my favourite breakfast spot in North Melbourne. Now it’s slow, overpriced and nowhere near as welcoming as it used to be. The staff couldn’t be more disinterested in serving you and when they get your order wrong, there is no apology. We later noticed it wasn’t even removed off the bill. We waited nearly 40 mins for 4 toasted sandwiches and chips when there were 4 other tables. We were asked if we wanted any last coffees…our food and first lot hadn’t even arrived yet! After another part of the order was forgotten, my partner went in to chase it up and interrupted one of the staff members being berated over how she had mopped. Such a sad decline of an Errol Street institution!

I was craving steak sandwich and it used to be good from this place, I used to travel for it. I don’t know what happened but this is not what I was expecting, nor how a steak sandwich should be. Chips were just cardboard sticks with too much salt. Coffee was ok , however my cup was taken while there was still a last sip left and I wasn’t asked if I want another one. That was $36 gone.
