Woorabinda

Woorabinda is a rural town and Aboriginal community in Central Queensland, Australia, situated approximately two hours west of Rockhampton. Established in 1927, it serves as a Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) community, a unique land tenure system for former Aboriginal reserves. As of the 2021 census, Woorabinda has a population of 1,019 residents, with 91.6% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The town is accessible via the Fitzroy Developmental Road and features a sealed airstrip used by chartered flights and aeromedical services. Local amenities include the Woorabinda State School, which offers primary education, and the Mimosa Creek Healing Centre, a detoxification and rehabilitation facility for men recovering from alcohol abuse. The community is known for its rich cultural heritage and active participation in music and dance, with groups like the Kulgoodah dancers gaining recognition.
