Established in the early 20th century, it was originally known as Kelly's Gully, later shortened to "the Gully" by locals. The village developed around the Warialda railway station, which was operational until its closure in 1985. Today, Warialda Rail comprises a former hotel, a cluster of houses, and a railway yard, reflecting its historical significance in the region.
