Established in 1940, the Waratah Rugby Union Club is a cornerstone of the Newcastle and Hunter Region's rugby community. Celebrating its 85th anniversary in 2025, the club has a rich history of fostering talent, producing 33 international players across all forms of rugby. The club's original colors—scarlet jerseys, navy shorts, and red & white socks—were chosen by founding member Ern Howarth to represent a broader community beyond Waratah. Home matches are played at Waratah Oval, Harris Street, Waratah.
