Historically, Teringie was a private subdivision, with its name approved in 1978 by the Geographical Names Board. The suburb is bordered by Morialta Conservation Park to the north and is surrounded by the suburbs of Norton Summit, Horsnell Gully, Skye, and Auldana. Wildlife such as koalas, kangaroos, possums, echidnas, and a variety of birdlife, including yellow-tail and red-tail black cockatoos, are commonly found in the area.
