The area is predominantly cleared for beef, dairy, and sheep grazing, offering a tranquil environment. The township features low-density urban housing with a small commercial area on the main street, including a hotel/pub, a hairdresser, and a general store that also serves as a newsagent and post office. The community is served by the South East and Tablelands bus network route 890, connecting Eden, Merimbula, and Bega several times a day. South Wolumla is also home to a National Broadband Network (NBN) satellite ground station consisting of four 13.5m dishes.
