This refinery, operational since 1967, is one of Australia's largest alumina refineries, covering 80 hectares of a 3,050-hectare site. The suburb also includes South Trees Island, accessible via a causeway bridge from Parsons Point, which hosts the refinery's wharf and storage facilities. South Trees is bordered by Gladstone Harbour to the north and northeast, Boyne Island to the east and southeast, and South Gladstone to the west.
