Savage River, TAS

Savage River is a remote mining village on Tasmania's west coast, established in the 1960s to support iron ore extraction. The Savage River Mine, operational since 1967, transports magnetite concentrate via an 85 km pipeline to Port Latta for export. The area is characterized by cool temperate rainforests, buttongrass moorlands, and diverse wildlife, including the Tasmanian devil and giant freshwater crayfish. Access to the village is limited, with the nearest visitor information center located in Strahan. The surrounding region offers nature walks, including the Huon Pine Walk and the Savage River Walk, providing glimpses into the area's natural beauty.
