Bell Bay Aluminium, located at Bell Bay Rd, Bell Bay TAS 7253, is a primary aluminium producer situated at the mouth of the Tamar River in Northern Tasmania. Operating since 1955, it was the first aluminium smelter in the Southern Hemisphere. The smelter operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, producing around 190,000 tonnes of aluminium annually. Its main metal products are ingot, block, and T-bar. Bell Bay Aluminium employs nearly 500 people, making it one of northern Tasmania’s largest private employers. The smelter is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto.
