In 1892, entrepreneurs drilled Australia's first oil well in the Coorong, believing they had found oil. Later, it was discovered that the 'oil' was actually a flammable, compacted vegetable substance known as 'coorongite'. A replica of the oil rig now stands as a monument to this enterprise.
