The park is historically significant as the birthplace of Australian Radio Astronomy, where, on 3 October 1945, Dr. Joseph Pawsey, Ruby Payne-Scott, and Lindsay McReady conducted the first successful Australian radio observations of the sun using a RAAF WWII radar unit.
