The Painted Cliffs on Maria Island showcase stunning sandstone formations adorned with vibrant red, orange, and yellow patterns. These colors result from groundwater rich in iron percolating through the sandstone, staining the rock over millions of years. The cliffs are best viewed during low tide, which occurs approximately two hours before and after low tide, allowing safe access to the rock platform. The 4.3-kilometer return walk from Darlington to the cliffs is graded as moderate, suitable for most visitors. Along the way, you can enjoy the beautiful Hopground Beach and observe native wildlife. Please note that a valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania's national parks.
