The Oriental Claims Historic Area, located 2 km south of Omeo, Victoria, is a preserved 202-hectare site that commemorates the region's rich gold mining heritage. From 1876 to 1904, the Oriental Company, a European mining enterprise, utilized hydraulic sluicing techniques to extract alluvial gold, significantly altering the landscape with cliffs up to 30 meters high. The area also honors the contributions of Chinese miners, such as Ah Fong, who operated successful claims from 1875. Visitors can explore walking tracks like Ah Fong's Loop and the Pioneer Claim Loop, which showcase mining remnants and offer insights into the area's history. The Oriental Claims Picnic Area provides facilities including toilets, picnic tables, and barbecues, making it an ideal spot to relax and reflect on the area's storied past.
