Newlands Coal Mine, situated approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Glenden in Queensland's Bowen Basin, commenced operations in 1983. Over its 40-year lifespan, it produced both thermal and metallurgical coal for export. In February 2023, the mine concluded its operations as planned and transitioned into a rehabilitation and closure phase. Throughout its tenure, Newlands Coal was 100% owned by Glencore and was recognized for its significant contributions to the local community, including partnerships with organizations like the Weetalaba Campdraft and the Glenden Rodeo.
