Situated approximately 250 km north of Sydney, it lies on the banks of the Macleay River, surrounded by forests and farmland. The area encompasses about 94.7 km² and has a population of around 26 residents. The community is part of the Clarence Valley Council and is within the state electorate of Clarence and the federal electorate of Page. Malabugilmah is adjacent to the suburb of Baryulgil.
