Nestled in Mount Barker's heart, Laratinga Wetlands is a 16.7-hectare haven offering walking, cycling, and bird-watching opportunities. Established in 1999, this man-made oasis serves as a productive water reclamation facility and biodiversity hotspot. Over 150 bird species, including rare and vulnerable ones, have been recorded here. The site features several trails and boardwalks winding through native vegetation, with interpretive signage providing insights into Aboriginal heritage, water treatment processes, and local flora and fauna. Amenities include picnic and BBQ areas, shelters, seating, and environmentally friendly toilets. The trails connect to the Mount Barker Linear Trail, a seven-kilometer shared pathway leading to Keith Stephenson Park. Laratinga Wetlands is a 35-minute drive from central Adelaide via the South-Eastern Freeway (take the Bald Hills exit), or five minutes from Mount Barker center and around fifteen minutes from Hahndorf.
