Venue

Jupiter Creek, SA

Explore the historic Jupiter Creek Gold Diggings, a former gold mining site from the mid-1800s, now part of the Kuitpo Forest Reserve. The area features a 3 km walking trail through stringybark forest, leading to various mine shafts, including a 60-meter underground tunnel accessible via a vertical steel ladder. Interpretive signs along the trail describe successive phases of mining at the site, including the 1869 chimney associated with the Beatrice Gold Mining Company, the 1906 sluicing dam, and the 1930 New Phoenix Tunnel. Fossicking is permitted using non-mechanical tools, such as pans, hand sluices, and metal detectors. Please note that there are no facilities at the site, so visitors should come prepared.
