Located at 144 Cathedral Street in Woolloomooloo, John Montagu is a charming café named after the fourth Earl of Sandwich, credited with inventing the sandwich. The café features simple décor with bright-blue striped awnings shading outdoor tables. Inside, a communal blond-wood table invites guests to enjoy a variety of handcrafted sandwiches made from loaves by Mosman's St Honoré bakery. Signature offerings include house-cured salmon with avocado, dill cream cheese, and salmon roe on rye; field mushroom with truffled parmesan, garlic crème fraîche, and rocket on multigrain; and a hearty beef cheek sandwich braised for 12 hours, served with cheddar, sauerkraut, Spanish onion, and house glaze. Popular breakfast options feature a bacon-and-egg bun with house-made secret sauce and house granola with seasonal fruits and honeyed yoghurt. Di Gabriel beans are used for espresso, and cold-drip coffee is served in scotch glasses with a lime wedge. Operating hours are Monday to Friday from 6:30 am to 4:00 pm, and weekends from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
