Elgas Cavern, located at Gate B41 Charlotte Road, Port Botany NSW 2036, is Australia's largest LPG storage facility, known as 'The Cavern'. Constructed at a cost of $190 million, it has a capacity of 65,000 tonnes, enough to heat 350,000 homes for a year. Opened in 2000 after four years of construction, the facility comprises four vast tunnel galleries carved 130 metres below the supply terminal in Port Botany. Each gallery measures 230 metres long, 11 metres high, and 14 metres wide. The dedicated docking system accommodates LPG ocean tankers up to 45,000 tonnes, facilitating efficient loading and unloading operations.
