Established in the late 1850s, it was originally known as Woodford Inn. The town's economy is primarily driven by the processing of timber from extensive pine plantations. Dartmoor is home to a football team competing in the South West District Football League and a golf club on Wapling Avenue. The local population is approximately 322 residents.
