Crinum Mine, located 62 km northeast of Emerald in Queensland's Bowen Basin, commenced longwall mining in June 1997. It was designed to replace the Gregory open-cut operation, which ceased in October 2012 due to profitability issues. The mine has an installed capacity of 4.25 million tonnes per year of metallurgical coal. Operated by the Gregory Joint Venture, a 50:50 partnership between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi, Crinum employs approximately 200 people. The mine utilizes advanced longwall mining technology, including high-capacity face supports and a powerful shearer, to extract coal from depths between 80 and 220 meters. Coal is processed at the Gregory wash plant and transported 380 km by rail to Gladstone for export.
