Port Fairy, VIC

Battery Hill, located across the bridge from Port Fairy's picturesque harbour, offers a glimpse into the town's maritime history. Originally known as Flagstaff Hill, it served as the Harbour Master's signal point for shipping. In the 1880s, local militia units established gun batteries and constructed concrete fortifications to protect the state from foreign warships. The site features a rare collection of cannons with their metal and wooden carriages and emplacements. Adjacent to the hill, the Historic Lifeboat Station, built in 1862 and relocated in 1873, showcases 19th-century maritime rescue equipment. Each January, the cannon atop Battery Hill is fired every Sunday morning to celebrate the New Year and share the town's history.
