Wivenhoe Dam, completed in 1984, is South East Queensland's largest water storage facility, supplying safe drinking water to Brisbane and the greater Ipswich area. Located on the Brisbane River, approximately 80 kilometers from Brisbane, the dam features a 2.3-kilometer-long embankment with five radial gates for controlled water releases during heavy rainfall. With a catchment area of 7,020 km², it can store up to 1.165 million megalitres at full supply level. Additionally, Wivenhoe Dam provides flood mitigation, holding back close to two million megalitres beyond its water supply capacity during flood events.
