RAAF Base Tindal, situated 15 kilometers southeast of Katherine in the Northern Territory, serves as a pivotal operational hub for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Established in 1942 and officially opened on 31 March 1989, the base is home to No. 75 Squadron, which operates F-35A Lightning II aircraft. The base also hosts No. 17 Squadron, No. 2 Squadron Detachment, 452 Squadron Tindal Flight, and NORFORCE. Its strategic location and favorable dry-season weather make it ideal for conducting high-end training exercises, including the biennial Exercise Pitch Black. Ongoing upgrades aim to enhance its capabilities, including extended runways and increased fuel storage, ensuring its role in regional defense remains robust.
