Since 2002, Newmont has overseen this significant gold mining operation, which has been a cornerstone of the region's mining industry. In 2016, a substantial $120 million upgrade expanded the mine's facilities, including a new decline and processing facilities, extending its operational life to 2027. The Granites Airport, situated on-site, underwent a $5.1 million upgrade in 2012, enabling all-weather jet operations and supporting approximately 950 fly-in/fly-out workers. Additionally, the Royal Flying Doctor Service utilizes the airport for aeromedical flights, enhancing healthcare access in the remote area.
