The Barron River Bridge Access, located at 1263 Kennedy Hwy, Kuranda QLD 4881, serves as a vital link between Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands. Constructed in 1963, the bridge spans 256 meters over the Barron River, facilitating daily travel for residents, freight, and essential services. In 2020, inspections revealed fatigue cracks in certain steel components due to decades of heavy vehicle use. To address these concerns, the Department of Transport and Main Roads implemented a comprehensive monitoring and testing program, ensuring the bridge's safety and operational status. A 42.5-tonne load limit is currently in place. Plans for a replacement bridge, downstream from the existing structure, are underway, aiming to enhance network reliability and safety for all road users.
