The Ashley Youth Detention Centre, located at 4260 Meander Valley Road in Deloraine, Tasmania, is the state's sole facility for detaining young offenders aged 10 to 18. Established in 1922 as the Ashley Home for Boys, it has evolved over the decades into its current form. The centre has a capacity of 51 beds and has been the subject of significant scrutiny and reform efforts. In 2021, the Tasmanian government announced plans to close Ashley and replace it with two smaller, therapeutic facilities by 2024. However, as of May 2025, the closure has been postponed to 2028, with construction of the new facility in Pontville expected to begin this year and complete by late 2027. The new facility aims to provide a child-centred and therapeutic model of care, focusing on rehabilitation and community safety.
