Established in 1990, the Aged Rights Advocacy Service (ARAS) is dedicated to supporting older South Australians in upholding their aged care and human rights. As the state's member of the Commonwealth-funded Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN), ARAS offers free, confidential, and statewide assistance to older individuals and their representatives. Services include advocacy for those in residential aged care or retirement villages, support for recipients of Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) or Home Care Package (HCP) services, and aid for individuals at risk of or experiencing abuse from family or friends. Additionally, ARAS provides culturally sensitive support through specialist Aboriginal Advocates and delivers the Home Care Check-In project, offering in-home safety checks for older individuals vulnerable due to social isolation. Accredited at the Certificate level of the Australian Service Excellence Standards, ARAS is committed to ensuring that older people are valued, respected, and empowered to make informed decisions about their care.
