Pilot Wilderness, NSW

Cascade Hut, nestled in the Pilot Wilderness Area of Kosciuszko National Park, offers a serene retreat for nature enthusiasts. Accessible via a 10-kilometer trail from Dead Horse Gap, the hut is surrounded by snowgum woodlands and alpine meadows. Built in 1935 by Bill Nankervis and fellow stockmen, it features horizontal slab walls and a restored iron roof. The Illawarra Alpine Club has diligently maintained the hut since the 1970s, preserving its rustic charm. The surrounding area, including the Cascades, inspired Elyne Mitchell's "Silver Brumby" books.
