Ricky Williams retired from football early, concerned about further wear and tear on his body and wanting to shift his focus to studying holistic medicine. As someone who suffered from social anxiety and physical pain on the gridiron, he turned to cannabis to medicate himself for most of his life. This decision was often at odds with the NFL’s substance use policy. He once stated, “[My] personal goal is to elevate the legitimacy of cannabis as a medicine and the respect of medical professionals for cannabis users.” In 2021, Williams founded Highsman to empower athletes and sports enthusiasts with the alternative medicine.
