Wongabel, QLD

Wongabel State Forest, located along the Kennedy Highway near Atherton, Queensland, safeguards a remnant of the endangered mabi forest, a complex notophyll vine forest. Visitors can explore two walking tracks: a 750-meter return walk and a longer 2.5-kilometer heritage route, both designed with consideration for walkers who are vision impaired. Interpretive signs along the trails provide insights into the area's history, forestry practices, and local ecology. The forest is home to unique wildlife, including Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos and various possums, which can be spotted during nighttime spotlighting. Camping is not permitted, and dogs must be on a leash at all times. The forest is open 24 hours a day, with wheelchair accessibility on the tracks, though assistance may be required.
