Waitpinga Beach

Waitpinga Beach, located within Newland Head Conservation Park on the Fleurieu Peninsula, offers a rugged coastal experience with its expansive 3.1 km stretch of golden sands bordered by vegetated dunes and towering cliffs. Renowned for its powerful ocean swells, the beach is a haven for experienced surfers seeking challenging waves. While swimming is not recommended due to strong rips and hidden gutters, the area provides excellent opportunities for fishing, particularly for salmon and mullet. Visitors can explore walking trails that offer panoramic views of the Southern Ocean, Waitpinga Creek, and the Pages in Backstairs Passage. Camping facilities are available at Waitpinga Campground, allowing guests to enjoy the serene sounds of the waves under the stars. The park's diverse habitats also support a variety of bird species, including the endangered Hooded Plover, making it a prime spot for birdwatching.
