Established in 1831 by William Lawrence, the Variety Bay Pilot Station was one of Tasmania's earliest maritime facilities, guiding ships into the Derwent River. The site features the stone foundations of the main building, a circular rock-walled watch tower, a brick-lined cellar, and a brick baker's oven. Additional remnants include convict quarters, stables, and a garden with flowering bulbs and oats. Adjacent to the pilot station, St. Peter's Church (1846) stands as one of the earliest Anglican churches in southern Tasmania. The area also includes a brickworks site, reflecting the island's early industrial activities. Managed by the Bruny Island Historical Society, the site offers a glimpse into Tasmania's colonial past.
