Undara Volcanic National Park, located 300 km southwest of Cairns, showcases one of the world's longest lava tube systems, formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 190,000 years ago. The park's diverse landscapes, from open woodlands to savannahs, conceal these geological wonders beneath rich basalt soils. Within the park, semi-evergreen vine thickets thrive in the moist, sheltered entrances of the lava tubes, providing habitats for unique flora and fauna. Visitors can explore walking tracks ranging from 2.5 km to 12 km return, with the Kalkani Crater rim walk offering panoramic views. Access to the lava tubes is available only through guided tours, ensuring safety and preservation of this natural wonder. The park is open 24 hours a day, with the cooler months of April to August being the preferred time to visit.
