Thunder Cave, nestled within Port Campbell National Park along Victoria's Great Ocean Road, is a captivating natural attraction renowned for its dramatic coastal scenery and the resonant sounds of waves crashing through limestone cliffs. Visitors can access the cave via a short walk from the Loch Ard Gorge car park, approximately 550 meters away. The path offers stunning views of the rugged coastline and the Southern Ocean. The cave's unique acoustics are best experienced during high tide when the waves create a thunderous roar as they surge through the narrow gorge. The area is also home to diverse marine life, including a colony of little penguins that can be spotted swimming offshore. For those interested in fishing, the sheltered location provides a tranquil spot away from strong winds. The best time to visit is during the months of December to March, when the weather is mild and there is less chance of rain. However, the optimal time for visiting Thunder Cave is during the month of January, when the tide is low and you can explore the cave’s many chambers. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight, as some parts of the cave are quite dark. And don’t forget your camera – Thunder Cave is one of the most photogenic places in Victoria!
