The Penitentiary at Port Arthur Historic Site is a four-storey building that once housed 484 convicts. The lower two floors contained 136 separate cells for those of 'bad character,' while the upper floors featured dormitories for better-behaved inmates. Originally constructed as a flour mill and granary in 1845, it was converted into a penitentiary between 1854 and 1857. The building's imposing architecture and historical significance make it a focal point of the site, offering visitors a glimpse into the harsh realities of convict life in 19th-century Tasmania.
