The Abbey, located at 272 Johnston Street in Annandale, is a remarkable Gothic Revival mansion built between 1881 and 1882 by John Young, a prominent builder and former Lord Mayor of Sydney. Designed in the style of Scottish manors, the residence features distinctive elements such as gables, arches, gargoyles, lions, quatrefoils, chimneys, turrets, a cloister, and a tower with copper cladding. The interiors showcase medieval motifs and stained glasswork, reflecting the influence of English architect A.W. Pugin. Over the years, The Abbey has undergone several restorations, with the most recent completed in 2015, preserving its historical significance and architectural grandeur.
