Sun Pictures, located at 8 Carnarvon Street in Broome, Western Australia, is the world's oldest operating open-air cinema, having been in continuous operation since 1916. This historic venue offers a unique movie-watching experience under the stars, with seating on canvas deck chairs and a grassed area for blankets. The cinema operates two sessions nightly, with doors opening approximately 30 minutes before the first session. A small kiosk provides snacks and beverages, including alcoholic drinks. As a licensed venue, smoking and BYO alcohol are not permitted. Patrons are advised to wear appropriate clothing and bring insect repellent, as mosquitoes and sandflies are present. Evenings from June to August can be chilly, so it's recommended to come prepared. The cinema is directly under the flight path for take-off and landing at the nearby airport, so patrons may experience occasional loud noises from aircraft. Historic audio tours are available Monday to Friday at 11:00 am for $5 per person.
