Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre, located at 2 Telford Avenue in Peterborough, South Australia, is a captivating museum that immerses visitors in the rich history of Australian railways. Once a bustling hub with over 100 passing trains daily, the centre now showcases a diverse collection of historic locomotives, carriages, and freight vehicles within its heritage-listed roundhouse and original workshops. Guided tours, lasting approximately 90 minutes, offer an up-close look at these artifacts, including the opulent 1923 First Class Lounge car. In the evenings, the centre presents South Australia's only Sound and Light Show, a visual and auditory spectacle that brings railway history to life. Visitors can relax in a restored 1916 rail carriage as the show unfolds, providing a unique and engaging experience. The centre is open daily, with tours available from 9 am to 3 pm, and the Sound and Light Show commencing after dark. Please note that bookings are essential for the evening show.
