Smith O'Brien's Cottage, located behind the hospital at Port Arthur, is a buttercream yellow brick building with significant historical importance. It was the residence of William Smith O'Brien, an Irish politician and leader of the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848. After his failed uprising, O'Brien was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1849. Initially sent to Maria Island, he was later transferred to Port Arthur, where authorities converted a stable into a cottage for his use. O'Brien was released in 1854 and returned to Ireland in 1856. The cottage has been preserved to reflect its convict-era appearance, offering visitors a glimpse into its past.
