Saibai Island, located in Queensland's Torres Strait, is a flat, predominantly mangrove island measuring approximately 20 km by 15 km. With a population of around 340 residents, the island is home to the Kalaw Kawaw Ya (KKY) language. Saibai Island is accessible via a bitumen airstrip, facilitating year-round access. The island's highest point is 1.7 meters above sea level, making it susceptible to flooding during the wet season and king tides. Regular trading occurs between Saibai and neighboring Papuan villages, with locals permitted to cross the border with appropriate permits. Strict quarantine regulations are enforced on the island.
