Runnymede, a beautifully preserved 1840s Regency marine villa, offers a glimpse into Tasmania's golden age. Built by lawyer Robert Pitcairn and his wife Dorothea, the house was later extended by Tasmania's first Anglican Bishop, Francis Russell Nixon. In 1864, Captain Charles Bayley acquired the property, naming it Runnymede after his favorite whaling ship. The Bayley family resided here for over a century. Visitors can explore the elegant house, featuring maritime collections and period furnishings, and stroll through the original 19th-century gardens, complete with historic trees and a cast-iron fountain.
