Robe, SA

The Robe Gaol Ruins, located at 3 Obelisk Road, offer a glimpse into the town's penal history. Established in 1861, the gaol featured a substantial stone cell block, holding and exercise yards, and a keeper's residence. It ceased operations in 1880, with the Mount Gambier Gaol deemed more suitable. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved remnants of the gaol, including the reinforced walls that were once bolstered with steel boiler plates from the wreck of the SS Admella. The site underwent restoration in 1995, enhancing its historical significance.
