Risdon Cove

Risdon Cove, located on the east bank of the Derwent River approximately 7 km north of Hobart, is a site of profound historical significance. In 1803, Lieutenant John Bowen established the first British settlement in Van Diemen's Land here, marking the beginning of European colonization in Tasmania. However, due to challenges such as inadequate water supply and soil fertility, the settlement was relocated to Sullivans Cove in 1804, which later became Hobart. Today, Risdon Cove is managed by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, offering visitors a chance to explore its rich heritage through walking tracks and a visitor centre.
