Established in 1937 as a Presbyterian mission, it was handed over to the community in 1974 and later renamed Pukatja. The community is renowned for Ernabella Arts, Australia's oldest continuously running Indigenous art centre, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Pitjantjatjara people.
