Puckapunyal

Puckapunyal, located approximately 115 km north of Melbourne, is a small rural suburb renowned for housing the Australian Army's primary training facility, the Puckapunyal Military Area. Established during World War II, this expansive base spans about 400 km² of bushland and former pasture, serving as a hub for military education and training. The area is home to the School of Armour, the School of Artillery, and the School of Transport, along with the Combined Arms Training Centre and the Joint Logistics Unit. The Royal Australian Armoured Corps Memorial and Army Tank Museum, situated within the base, showcases a collection of over 80 armoured vehicles and anti-tank weapons, celebrating the achievements of the Australian Light Horse and the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. Access to the base and museum is restricted; non-defence visitors must be escorted or obtain special permits. Surrounding Puckapunyal are vast open spaces, bushland, and farmland, offering a tranquil environment. While the suburb lacks major commercial amenities, its proximity to Seymour provides access to essential services.
