Perched at the eastern end of the Bellarine Peninsula, the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse stands as a beacon guiding vessels through the treacherous waters of The Rip, the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. Completed in 1902, this cylindrical concrete tower reaches a height of 21.3 meters and is topped with a Chance Brothers lantern. The lighthouse is notable for its early use of reinforced concrete and its distinctive white tower with a black lantern and dome. Surrounding the base is an octagonal, two-storey brick signal station and observation room. The light was automated in 1999, but the signal station continues to be staffed, controlling the movements of commercial shipping within designated areas both outside and inside Port Phillip Heads, making it possibly the last staffed lighthouse in Australia.
