Gwabegar, NSW

Spanning 33,386 hectares, the Pilliga State Conservation Area is a vital habitat for Australia's threatened species. Established in December 2005, it is part of the expansive Pilliga Forest, the largest remaining native forest on the Australian continent. The area is home to diverse wildlife, including eastern pygmy possums, swamp wallabies, and the south-eastern long-eared bat. Notably, the conservation area features a 5,800-hectare feral predator-free zone, facilitating the reintroduction of locally extinct species such as the greater bilby and bridled nail-tail wallaby. Visitors can explore the forest's rugged beauty through a network of trails, either by walking or car touring. The nearby Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre offers additional information and resources for visitors.
