Historically, it was home to the Poybah Provisional School, which operated from 1896 until its closure circa 1926. The name "Pickanjinnie" is derived from an Aboriginal term meaning "place of land and water where the tortoise goes." Today, the locality is known for its serene landscapes and historical significance.
