Orford Bird Sanctuary

Nestled near the mouth of the Prosser River in Orford, Tasmania, the Orford Bird Sanctuary is a vital haven for both resident and migratory shorebirds. This sandspit and lagoon host over 20 species, including the vulnerable Fairy Tern, Hooded Plover, and Red-capped Plover. Notably, it serves as one of the southernmost breeding colonies for the Fairy Tern. Established through collaboration among local groups and conservationists, the sanctuary is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA), underscoring its global significance.
